Birmingham Public Library Young Professionals Now Accepting Nominations for New Members
The Birmingham Public Library Young Professionals (BPLYP) is accepting nominations for new members ages 25-40. In their fourth year as an organization, the BPLYP are a dynamic group of young professionals who support the literary culture of the Birmingham region and are committed to making the library the center of lifelong learning for the city.

Board Meeting Schedule Change
The Birmingham Public Library Board has changed the time of the monthly board meetings to the second Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. The next meeting is Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

Library Closure
The Central Library will be closed Saturday, June 4, due to the Steel City Jazz Festival in Linn Park. The Central Library will resume regular hours on June 5 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Events & Programs

Bards & Brews Open Mic Poetry Event
Avondale Regional Branch Library, June 3, 6:30 p.m.
The Avondale Library event on June 3 will feature free craft beer sampling courtesy of Avondale Brewing Co. The J. Clyde will handle the pouring. The festivities start at 6:30 p.m. with live music from Bob Marston (performing in place of Josh Wheeler), beer tasting, and light refreshments. The poetry begins to flow at 7:00 p.m. with Brian "Voice Porter" Hawkins serving as host.

Summer Reading Kickoff Jam
Avondale Regional Branch Library, June 6, 6:30 p.m.
Exercise your mind and body with music that will make you want to get up and dance! George Griffin and The Firebirds will play a free concert with songs from their new CD.

Anna Moo in Concert
Central Library, June 8, 10:00 a.m.
Award-winning children's singer/songwriter Anna Moo will perform a concert at the Central Library. The event is free and open to the public. Moo is dedicated to using music as a FUNdamental teaching tool in preschools and elementary schools. Her presentations are dynamic, multiculturally oriented, and always top notch educational entertainment.

Steps to Starting Your Business
Central Library, June 6, 12:00 p.m.
Seminar presenters will be veteran mentors from the Birmingham chapter of SCORE, a national nonprofit comprised of volunteers willing to share their business knowledge and experience with prospective entrepreneurs and small business owners. Free but registration is required.

Handle with Care: Preserving Your Family Papers and Photographs
Springville Road Regional Branch Library, June 7, 6:30 p.m.
Titusville Branch Library, June 9, 2:00 p.m.

There are many basic and inexpensive things you can do to ensure that your family letters, scrapbooks, and photographs are preserved for the future. This talk introduces the fundamentals of home archiving.

Russell Lee Low Impact Exercise
Springville Road Regional Branch Library, June 9, 10:00 a.m.
Russell Lee, a popular local fitness instructor, will show us all how to safely and effectively exercise.

Summer Beach Reads
I know it's not unusual for Alabama, but it feels like we went from winter directly into summer. Our 70-degree days have been replaced by 80s and 90s. We may as well head down to the beach, lie around in swimsuits, and listen to the waves. Grab a cool glass of your favorite beverage, put on some sunscreen, relax, and enjoy these new summer titles.

Urban Fiction
North Avondale Branch Library, June 9, 11:00 a.m.
Springville Road Regional Branch Library, June 10, 11:00 a.m.
Urban fiction has become one of the most popular genres for our library patrons. Birmingham Public Library staff will provide an overview of the genre, discuss urban fiction publishers, authors, and series, and reveal ways to discover new authors you may like.
