#FFBPLGivingTuesday

#FFBPLGivingTuesday — Libraries are our best "social infrastructure"

Have you ever considered the role of libraries as social infrastructure? (Want a definition?  See blog and Friends Facebook page).  Do you realize that the libraries throughout Jefferson County serve as places where you can
  • register to vote and vote, apply for a passport, attend a neighborhood or community meeting, and access business services
  • learn and share resources on subjects such as genealogy, how to use technology, how to write a book, how to knit, how to code, make a robot, write a poem
  • have fun at book clubs, movie nights, intimate concerts, art shows, discussion groups
  • rent a venue for a baby shower, a club meeting, or other group events
  • buy used books, movies, music and other library materials as well as coffee, snacks and cold drinks
  • have access to vetted information sources and information professionals (librarians) who can help you find information you need
  • see nationally-known speakers, performers and writers, as well as those closer to home who  live and perform right here in Birmingham
The Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library encourages you to commit your energy and your resources to advocate to our public officials on behalf of public libraries throughout the county.  The resources of each of our libraries are available to all citizens of Jefferson County through our Jefferson County Library Cooperative.  And then on #GivingTuesday, November 27, donate to your favorite library to help them give even more to you.

We encourage every citizen in Jefferson County to consider an online gift to the Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library.  The Central library downtown houses Birmingham's archives and the nationally-renown Linn-Henley research library, as well as highly-regarded genealogy programming and resources, all available to every citizen in the County.  Central is the headquarters library of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative and serves as the heart of our entire county-wide library system.

So on #GivingTuesday, November 27, or any other day, give a donation to theFriends Foundation, whose mission is to promote the programs, services and partnerships of BPL through fundraising, advocacy and outreach.  Consider joining our membership organization, the Friends of the BPL.  To learn more, or donate online, go to www.friendsofthebpl.org
