First Thursday Fiction Book Group: The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.

Second Thursday Fiction Book Group: The Buddha in the Attic

The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka tells the story of a group of young women brought from Japan to San Francisco as “picture brides” nearly a century ago. Explore Your World @ Hoover Library!

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
PASSPORT TO THE WORLD
FUN! FREE! FOR ALL AGES!

Explore the continents of the world, all within the walls of the Hoover Library. Enjoy the foods, learn the dances and listen to the music. See the animals, make the crafts, play the sports, explore the literature, view short films and more!

The library will feature the following countries during this year's annual Celebrate Diversity celebration - Spain, Germany, Pakistan, Korea, Argentina, Canada and Kenya. Also featured will be the continents of Antarctica and Australia.

Coffee-ol-ogy Cafe will kick off the event with a program on the Foods and Coffees of the World on the Library Plaza stage at 1:00 pm.

The Birmingham Zoo will present a program at 2:00 pm on the Library Plaza stage highlighting the amazing adaptive skills that animals from Africa have to help them survive in the wild. This 30 minute program features several different animals, each with unique adaptations, and focuses on animal types, biomes and animal diversity.

There will be fun activities featuring these countries for all ages from demonstrations of flamenco and tango dancing to crafts, sports, film and trivia activities.

"Get Rhythm", led by John Scalici, an internationally recognized drum circle facilitator, speaker and musician, will lead a fun-filled interactive community drum circle celebration starting at 3:15 pm in The Library Theatre. Rhythm is a universal language, so come be part of a rhythm-charged group experience that will wrap-up Hoover Library's "Passport to the World" event.

Write Club Presents "How to Pitch Your Novel"

Guest speakers Carla Swafford, author of Circle of Danger and Lexi George, author of Demon Hunting in Dixie, will explore what a writer goes through to pitch that winning novel idea.

The Write Club is a monthly forum for local amateur writers to meet and discuss their work. The goal of Write Club is to inspire and encourage literary involvement in the community by providing an environment in which local authors can network, share their writing and offer each other moral support and constructive criticism.
