1st Thursday Book Group: Clara and Mr. Tiffany
Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland

In her sixth work of fiction about the inter-penetration of life and art, Vreeland celebrates the putative designer of Tiffany’s leaded-glass lampshades. That would be Clara Driscoll. Some art historians now believe that it was Clara, unacknowledged in her lifetime, who conceived the lampshades. What is indisputable is that, encouraged by Louis Tiffany, she was a major creative force at his Glass and Decorating Company. From 1892 to 1908, she oversaw the Women’s Department; many of her workers were from poor immigrant families and still in their teens. Here Clara is a commanding figure: a mother hen to the Tiffany Girls, a feminist challenging the rampant sexism of the Men’s Department and an imaginative innovator marrying glass to flowers and insects.

Nonfiction Book Group: The Emperor of All Maladies

The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee

The Emperor of All Maladies is a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years.

Disaster Recovery, Planning, and Management for Small Business

No matter how good you are as a businessperson and manager, there will always be circumstances beyond your control that can affect your business. No one likes to think about such large-scale catastrophes such as devastating tornadoes, fire or floods. Fortunately, those events are rare, but smaller “disasters,” such as computer crashes, power outages, or loss of key staff can wreak havoc on a small firm.

Preparing for the worst can help minimize the risk. Our speaker, Tom Appleby is an engineer who was actively involved in performing disaster preparedness studies at Bellsouth and UPS.

This program will teach you how to implement a disaster recovery plan that fits your business.

Second Thursday Book Group: As I Lay Dying
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

Addie Bundren, the wife of Anse Bundren and the matriarch of a poor southern family, is very ill, and is expected to die soon. Her oldest son, Cash, puts all of his carpentry skills into preparing her coffin, which he builds right in front of Addie’s bedroom window. Although Addie’s health is failing rapidly, two of her other sons, Darl and Jewel, leave town to make a delivery for the Bundrens’ neighbor, Vernon Tull, whose wife and two daughters have been tending to Addie. Shortly after Darl and Jewel leave, Addie dies. The youngest Bundren child, Vardaman, associates his mother’s death with that of a fish he caught and cleaned earlier that day. With some help, Cash completes the coffin just before dawn. Vardaman is troubled by the fact that his mother is nailed shut inside a box, and while the others sleep, he bores holes in the lid. Addie and Anse’s daughter, Dewey Dell, whose recent sexual liaisons with a local farmhand named Lafe have left her pregnant, is so overwhelmed by anxiety over her condition that she barely mourns her mother’s death. A funeral service is held on the following day, where the women sing songs inside the Bundren house while the men stand outside on the porch talking to each other.

Thursday, September 13 at 10:00 am--Theatre Level Meeting Rooms

Playing @ the Plaza: Broken Letters
Broken Letters will perform their music scored for APT's Wernher von Braun documentary Missile to Moon with the film footage incorporated into their performance.

Their music springs from nearly life-long musical partners David Hickox and Brad Davis who, supported by a revolving cast of players, craft songs that reference their rich southern musical heritage with a mix of reverence and defiance--incorporating krautrock and avant garde influences into the traditional American songform.

Nonfiction Book Group: Empire of the Summer Moon
Empire of the Summer Moon by S. C. Gwynne

The vast, semi-arid grasslands of the southern Great Plains could be dominated by hunters and warriors on horseback. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the Comanches, often referred to as “lords of the Plains,” were the single most powerful military force in the region, to the frustration of both the Mexican and U.S. governments. In this engrossing chronicle, award-winning journalist Gwynne traces the rise of the Comanche people from their roots as primitive bands of hunter-gatherers to their mastery of the horse and emergence as the feared power brokers of the area. At the center of the narrative is the charismatic Quanah Parker, who skillfully navigated the gaps between his traditional culture and the emerging, settled culture of the late-nineteenth century. - Booklist
